About Me I am an academic and user experience (UX) researcher working in the world of Interaction Design. I study the complex, messy and intriguing interactions between people, digital technologies and the environments in which they're used, with a view to designing new kinds of interactive computational technologies and services. I am currently Senior Lecturer in Experience-Centred Design, in the Digital Interaction group, in the School of Computing Science, Newcastle University. I can mostly be found hanging out in the Culture Lab. I have a background in psychology (University of York) and ergonomics (Loughborough University), and have a PhD from a computer science department (University of Nottingham), where I was a member of the Mixed Reality Lab. I was previously a Post-doc in the Socio-Digital Systems group at Microsoft Research Cambridge and a Lecturer of Human-Computer Interaction at the University of Nottingham. |

Research Interests I've worked on quite a few different projects over the years, in quite diverse areas of Human-Computer Interaction (you can see my publications below). Some of my main interests however, have been in video-mediated communication, remote collaboration, tangible and surface computing, physical-digital hybridity, personal archiving / digital storage and the future of memorialisation. It's these last few areas which have exercised me most, and I've spent a lot of time thinking about the relationship between human memory and digital and physical artefacts, working with concepts like 'Technology Heirlooms' to understand how we relate to digital technologies. I'm particularly keen on exploring how more nuanced explorations of human values and experiences, in relation to memory and temporality (especially the slow computing movement), can lead us to design more evocative and inspiring technologies. Much of my work has involved studying domestic environments and has attempted to consider how technology might support or perturb relationships in the home. I am still keen to pursue work in this space, and in particular, after my work on video-communication, am interested in examining support for communication and connection between and across domestic 'spaces' as defined by changing patterns of mobility. |
